He is an American architecture photographer and is best known for Case Study House no. 22, Los Angeles. He was born in Connecticut and then moved to Los Angeles. The photo was taken in 1960 and was number 22 out of 27 houses that were apart of Arts & Architecture Case Study series. The series commissioned modernist architecture in Southern California. The house has also been shown in many different films and TV shows. It became one of the most recognizable houses in the study.
Line- The lines of the roof moves your eyes to the center of the image where the woman is sitting. Also the lines of the glass windows also draw your eyes to the center of the image. Color Shape-The shapes are mostly geometric with rectangles and circles. The rectangles are from the windows and the roof. The circles come from the lamps hanging from the ceiling. Form-The shapes all form to make create a sophisticated vibe from the house. The house being all “stiff” creates a different mood from the image than if the building was more fluid. Texture- There is texture in the plants below but the building is mostly smooth. Space- There is negative space where the roof and house meet to create shapes that we can see the city from. Value- There are many values of light whites to dark blacks. LIGHT- There is light coming from the city below and light from the lamps inside the house . Unity- There is unity in the lines of the building and how they all come together. Variety Balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial)- Its asymmetrical because the building is only on one side of the image. My personal reaction was that I really liked the image. I like the city in the background and also the lines coming from the building. The photograph has implemented a kind of way that people do architecture photography. It hasn’t really had a true impact on the rest of the world. |
